Our Executive Director – Ms. Denise McKee
Ms. McKee has been the executive director with the Council since June 2011. Denise’s education and career, in the field of disabilities, has spanned over 25 years. Denise left Ontario 5 years ago, where she was Director of a large Community Living Organization that served over 600 individuals with a staff of over 300 employees, to support her husband’s career.
She brought with her a vast range of expertise for supports for individuals living with disabilities including; residential, employment, family and children’s services. This expertise comes from both a professional and personal base. Denise moved far North, to Aklavik, with her husband and 4 children. Her husband, Neil, taught school in Aklavik and she managed the Joe Greenland Elders’ Long Term Care facility. When Joe Greenland closed she took on the role of Social Worker in the community. During this time she worked diligently to address concerns of the elders and people living with disabilities in the community.
After 3 years she relocated to Yellowknife to take on the role as Executive Director with the NWT Disabilities Council while her husband took on the position of Regional Inclusive Schooling Coordinator for Tlicho. Since her arrival Denise has focused on revitalizing the Council and working closely with all levels of government, community partners and other organizations to ensure the issues concerning people living with disabilities are addressed throughout the NWT. She sits on many committees both on Territorial and National levels to further this agenda.
